PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Phil Mickelson captured his first Open Championship at Muirfield in Gullane, Scotland,
Sunday, earning his fifth major title and becoming the third player to qualify for the 31st PGA Grand Slam of Golf,
Oct. 15-16, at Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton, Bermuda.
Mickelson, who shot a final-round 6-under-par 66 for a three-stroke victory, is the second left-hander
to win golf’s oldest major (Bob Charles in 1963). The 43-year-old joins Masters Champion Adam Scott and
U.S. Open Champion Justin Rose in the 2013 PGA Grand Slam of Golf. The final member of the elite foursome
will be determined following the 95th PGA Championship, Aug. 8-11, at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y.
The PGA Grand Slam of Golf, the season-ending showcase event that boasts the most difficult qualification
requirement in the game – a major championship – will be televised by TNT to a worldwide audience.
Mickelson, who now owns three legs of golf’s Grand Slam events, competed in the 2004 and 2005 PGA Grand Slam of Golf.
He won the 2004 title with an event-record 59 in the final round.
The PGA Grand Slam of Golf features a $1.35 million purse, with the winner receiving $600,000;
second-place finisher, $300,000; third-place finisher, $250,000; and fourth-place finisher, $200,000.
TNT’s prime time broadcast of the event reaches a worldwide audience of 88.9 million U.S. homes and international
viewers in more than 100 countries.
The PGA Grand Slam of Golf is hosted by the Bermuda Department of Tourism, Port Royal Golf Course, a 6,842-yard,
